Charlie Broun created a multi-function African-American business building on Ledbetter Road in Post-War Spindale, North Carolina. That three-story building housed doctor’s offices on the second floor, apartments on the third floor, with a barber and beauty salon, grocer, and the Bells Theatre on its main floor. The Bells Theatre would become the only African American Theatre in Spindale’s history.

The $30,000 Bells Theatre launched on February 26, 1949 with Johnny Mack Brown in “Valley of Fear”. The all African-American staff consisted of Bishop Waddell as projectionist, Carrie Mills as cashier and Charlie Broun as manager. The location was just across the street from the State Prison Camp. The theatre caught fire on October 8, 1961 and the entire building was destroyed. No efforts were made to rebuild the commercial building.
