Gary businessman T.W. Englehart opened the 150-seat Princess Theatre in the Tapper block on November 28, 1908. It was located in a remodeled space at 149 S. Hohman Avenue, which later became 573 Hohman Avenue. This would have placed the Princess Theatre across the street from the northeast corner of the building that became the front of the Parthenon Theatre. (In Hammond’s city-wide 1930 renumbering the Princess Theatre building would have been at about 5133 Hohman Avenue.)

The Princess Theatre, managed by P.M. Riley, sported inlaid marble and plush-back opera chairs. It featured “moving picture” entertainment and songs at a five-cent price point. Vaudeville was later added. Emil Klitzke became the proprietor in April 1916. There’s no mention of the theatre after May 1916 so it either closed or received a new name.
