The Del Rio Theatre is an extremely short-lived first-run movie theatre located at Western Village in downtown Wisconsin Dells owned by Bill Graff and managed by Gari Spagnoletti who is also the then-assistant principal at Sauk-Prairie High School at the time.
It started life as a 100-seat single-screener when it opened on July 23, 1981 with “The Legend of the Lone Ranger”, and was the first indoor movie theatre to operate in Wisconsin Dells since the October 1958 closure of the Dells Theatre. Prior to the Del Rio Theatre’s opening, the closest indoor first-run movie theatres that surrounds Wisconsin Dells are in Baraboo (the Al Ringling Theatre) and the Portage (the Portage Theatre).
The Del Rio Theatre originally operated as an all-year theatre, but later appeared to be seasonal the following year. After new management took the theatre over in May 1983, the Del Rio Theatre reverted back to an all-year operation.
The Del Rio Theatre was converted into a twin in February 1984, but unfortunately this immediately did not last very long at all. Due to poor attendance and many reports of vandalism and behavioral issues from theatre patrons, Graff closed the Del Rio Twin Cinema for good in November 1984.
