Columbus Theatre

Possibly located on Main Street. The Lyric Theatre opened as early as 1909. By 1914 it had been renamed Majestic Theatre. It was renamed the Columbus Theatre on July 5, 1936.

In its final couple of years in operation after new management took over in May 1954, films were screened on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays instead of the normal seven-days-a-week. The Columbus Theatre closed in 1956.

An item datelined Columbus Junction in The Show World of July 3, 1909, said that “A. Westcott, Marshalltown, and G. G. Peck will open a picture theater here.” I’ve been unable to connect this project specifically to the Lyric, but it’s possible that it was the same house.

I think this has to be the theater at 232 Main St. It’s the only one on the 1917 and 1935 maps. It was located in the northern storefront of the old Trues Opera House, which was built in 1879. The March 1909 map shows a harness shop here. The building is in decent shape today. This space may be a bar.

The 1914-15 directory lists a Majestic on Main St. Given the size of the town, this was probably the same thing.

A postcard from about 1910-15 shows the entry was typical for the era. Recessed arched entry with an outdoor ticket booth.
