Bermondsey Town Hall

Located in the Southeast London district of Bermondsey. The Bermondsey Town Hall was built in 1881 in an Italianate style to the plans of architect George Elkington. From 1897 it was screening regular film shows during winter seasons. A permanent projection box was built in April 1909. A.J. West presented the film programmes. It was granted a Cinematograph Licence on January 1, 1910.

The building was hit by German bombs in 1941 and the remains were demolished in 1963. An apartment building now stands on the site, which contains a Sainsbury’s Local supermarket. Stone gate pillars from the original bombed building are still in place in front of the Sainsbury’s. To the left of the building is the original Library building which was built in the 1880’s in an Italianate style to complement the old Town Hall.

Adjacent to the right-hand side, the current Bermondsey Town Hall was built in 1928 as public baths and became municipal offices. It is a Grade II Listed building.
