Leland Theatre

This theatre was constructed sometime in 1900 to replace a previous building destroyed by fire in November 1899. It does not appear on the January 1900 map, nor does construction seem to have begun.

The new opera house, constructed by Cyrus Leland, a very prominent local citizen who also built the structures flanking it, had an unusual stepped roofline, and an attractive red brick facade accented in yellow brick. The Leland Opera House was located on the second and third floor, above commercial spaces.

Movies were shown by 1914 at least, and it was listed through the late-1920’s. In later years, it was also known as the Leland Theatre. It closed in the early-1940’s. A LaBelle Theatre is listed in 1950, but as this was an upstairs location, it’s unlikely ‘modern’ fire codes would have allowed this to operate so late, and the LaBelle Theatre was almost certainly elsewhere.

The building today is in good shape. The commercial space on the ground floor does not seem to be occupied, but the upstairs may be used as a residence.
