The Showcase Theatre was first listed on December 17, 1971, in the Los Angeles Times Independent Theatre Guide under Antelope Valley. Located in the Aspen Mall, its first advertised movie was Ali McGraw in “Love Story” on December 22, 1971.
When construction of the mall began in June 1971, the Los Angeles Times reported the architect of the mall was William Rudolph and Associates.
The present Remax Real Estate office matches a photo from the 1972 California City promotional advertisement with this caption: “Showcase Theatre, the new California City Showcase Theatre. A deluxe, 300 seat, wide screen, first run, stereophonic sound theatre”.
The Showcase Theatre ended its run in the Times Independent Theatre Guide on January 18, 1984.
California City was promoted to compete with Los Angeles, 100 miles north, with housing, a Holiday Inn, restaurants, golf course and bowling centers. Its promise was never realized and today California City has a population of about 15,000, many employed at Edwards Air Force Base.
