The Umeda Piccadilly was located inside the Umeda Shochiku Kaikan (now the Plaza Umeda Building) and opened its doors by the Shochiku Tokyu chain on March 15, 1980 with Steven Spielberg’s “1941” in Screen 1, the Japanese film “Tomorrow’s Joe” in Screen 2, and the Japanese film “The Call Of The Distant Mountains” in Screen 4. Screen 3 opened with a concert film featuring Eikichi Yazawa.
When the theater officially opened its doors for the first time, Screens 1 and 2 located on the 10th and 8th floors were named Piccadillys 1 & 2, while Screens 3 and 4 on the 5th and 3rd floors were named Umeda Shochiku and Umeda Roxy. During its later years, all auditoriums were named Umeda Piccadilly 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Screens 1 and 2 (605 seats in Screen 1 and 455 seats in Screen 2) were affiliates of both the Marunouchi Piccadilly 1 and 2. Screen 3 (403 seats) was originally part of a Toho chain but took over the Marunouchi Lovre affiliation due to he closure of the Umeda Toei Kaikan due to deterioration alongside the opening of the Umeda Burg 7. Screen 4 has the same amount of seats as Screen 2 and was an affiliate of the Marunouchi Piccadilly 3.
Some notable films the theater screened over the years include “1941”, “Flashdance”, the Babe series, “Finding Nemo”, “The Polar Express”, “Ocean’s Twelve”, the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings series, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Chronicles of Narnia series, and the Matrix series among others.
The Umeda Piccadilly closed for the final time on January 16, 2011 and its operations was immediately moved to the Osaka Station City Cinema prior to its May 4, 2011 opening.
