Golden Cockerel Theatre

Located in Palm Beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast at the corner of Gold Coast Highway and Sixth Avenue. The Palm Beach Theatre was built by Bert Cockerill who was an avid photographer and film buff. It was opened in 1949 and was a family affair. His daughter Margaret was the projectionist, and the family including his son Bert lived in an apartment above the cinema foyer. It was renamed Golden Cockerel Cinema in 1950 (although not a reference to Bert Cockerill’s name).

It screened first run movies, but only after they had played at the cinemas in Southport and Surfers Paradise. Bert decided to begin screening Surfing, rock & novelty movies and this paid off very well as they packed the cinema for a good 10 years. The Golden Cockerel Cinema was closed by the Cockerill family in 1981.
