Located in the South Auckland suburb of Papakura, the Hawkins Theatre was built in 1990 by the former Papakura District Council (before the area became a suburb of the big city).
It is named after then-mayor George Hawkins, who was instrumental in the creation of this performing arts venue for the local community. As the Hawkins Entertainment and Conference Centre, it was officially opened on 14th July 1990 by the Governor General, the Most Reverend Sir Paul Reeves.
With full backstage facilities, the Hawkins Theatre has hosted everything from local theatre to touring shows such as the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and hosts the South Auckland Performing Arts Festival. The hugely popular Hawkins Youth Theatre Company was launched in 2012.
A regular film programme has also evolved over the past 10-12 years, and is an important element of its programming.
The exceptionally large foyer has two sets of stairs leading up to what appears at first to be the circle. But these lead only to the projection and lighting booths; the very nicely appointed auditorium has a single seating block.
