Located in Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, the Majestic Cinema opened in 1930. It was the first cinema to be opened by Robert Kerridge, and followed his acquisition of the city’s Palace Picture Theatre, which he had renamed the Regent Cinema.
Robert Kerridge went on to establish a large circuit. In 1946, the Rank Organisation in England acquired a 50 per cent holding. This was presumably when the cinema was renamed the Odeon.
Raey Wheeler was a long-standing member of staff, who began as an usher at the age of 19 and worked her way up to being the manager. In 1990 she acquired the cinema then, in 1995, spent £2.25m converting it into a three screen operation. At some time later, two additional, smaller screens were created.
Raey passed away in February 2015; her daughter now runs the cinema.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:290, Screen 2:145, Screen 3:145, Screen 4:30 and Screen 5:40.
