In Whanganui (also spelt Wanganui), in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of the North Island, the building that houses the Embassy 3 Cinema was originally built in 1903 as a drapery and clothing store. Known as Paul’s, and designed by Thomas Harvey (responsible for Whanganui Rowing Club and other city centre buildings), it was owned by Joseph Paul & Company.
Sadly, Joseph Paul died in 1904, but his family continued to operate the business until at least the 1920’s.
By the 1930’s, insurance firm National Mutual Life Association, founded in 1869, had acquired the building.
In 1950 it was converted into the State Cinema, operated by National Mutual Life Association/ Amalgamated Theatres Ltd., to plans drawn up by architects H. Francis Willis and C. Newton Hood.
The work included the addition of what was described as a “prominent façade”, which included the words “National Mutual Life” and “State” in italics above the entrance.
Some time later it was renamed the Embassy Cinema.
The Embassy Cinema was modernised and tripled in 1994, re-opening as the Cinema 3 Complex. The substantial alterations were completed by Bruce Dickson, of Dickson Lonergan Ltd., and included the current Art Deco upper façade.
The cinema is now known as the Embassy 3. (The use of the number in the name is a little unfortunate as, at some time, space was found for a modest-sized fourth screen!)
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:156, Screen 2:139, Screen 3: 82 and Screen 4 (“The Lounge”):20.
