Theater

This theater appears on the 1909 Sanborn, in the rear of the Harlan House, a large hotel originally built in 1857 as the home of Senator James Harlan, and turned into a hotel after he lost his seat and much of his income. It was added onto several times afterward, and the theater was located in a circa 1880 addition that was originally the kitchen and dining room, with hotel rooms above.

A stage and scenery were located in the old kitchen space. This operation was not a success, and the theater does not appear in the 1914-15 listings. The NRHP history for the building makes no mention of a theater. The 1920 map shows the entire building being used as flats.

The building today is in good shape, but the usage is unclear. It may be apartments. This theater may never have shown films. Hopefully someone with more information will confirm whether the listing should be kept or deleted.
