This replaced the 19th Century built Mershon’s Hall. Frank Noel built the multipurpose, three-story Plymouth Opera House in 1904 and opening in 1906. It housed a large opera house - 650 seats - on the second floor and a movie house, the original Metropolitan Theatre - on the first floor. Glen Huff operated the theatre, and neighbor Henry Jackson operated the billiards parlor plus barber shop.
The Metropolitan Theatre had converted to sound but broke out in a major fire on January 26, 1935. That took out the building including the opera house, the billiards parlor and the barber. Unfortunately, theatre operator Huff’s family home was struck by lightning not long after also burning to the ground.
A Streamline Moderne style replacement theatre was built across the way and became the New Metropolitan Theatre turned Franklin Theatre turned Plymouth Theatre which operated some 20 years. (It has its own entry on Cinema Treasures).
