In Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute, the Picture Palace opened in March 1911 in a purpose-built metal and wood building.

It was renamed the Cine Electric Picture House from 14th April 1913.

At first, its only competition was the La Scala, which had opened in 1913, but, with the Tower Cinema about to open as well (see separate Cinema Treasures entries), the Cine Electric Picture House closed in 1926.

The building was converted into the Plaza Ballroom, which proved especially popular with British and American servicemen during World War II, who dubbed it the ‘Honky Tonk’.

It is not known when the Plaza Ballroom closed, but the building was eventually acquired by the town council. In 1970 it was demolished and replaced by a block of flats.
