The 600-seat Family Theatre was first listed in 1931. It was located in a three story commercial building that was constructed sometime between 1910 and 1921. It was originally a restaurant and bakery, and had a simple but attractive facade of white glazed brick.
The theatre was renamed in 1943, becoming the Times Theatre. This is shown as closed in the 1947 listings, with a reduced capacity of 400.
At some point, all but one building on this section of the block was demolished for a repulsive bank which might be from 1970-1980.

The July 13, 1935 Motion Picture Herald reported that the Mort Singer Theatres Corporation had taken over the Family and Strand theaters at Marshalltown.
