The Lincoln Theatre opened in the silent era in Galveston. On March 7, 1914, it was taken over by an African-American operator as a theatre for African American audiences. It was the city’s second such theatre following the Royal Theatre. Five months later, the Lincoln Theatre was joined by the Princess Theatre at 2621 Market Street and later by the Star Theatre.

On December 14, 1921, the Lincoln Theatre switched names to the Liberty Theatre under new ownership by Kid Thomas Amusement. Jack Johnson pugilist films were the favorite films booked. The venue was known for films, live music, and vaudeville. During the 1920’s, it was joined by the Dixie Theatre #3 as silent-era African-American theaters.
