Hominy theatre operators H.E. and J.R. Mills decided in 1926 that the time was right to have a third silent-era theatre in downtown Pawhuska, Oklahoma. They found an opening in the existing Phelps Building next to Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store #2 in town. They launched their 500-seat Mills Theatre on September 4, 1926 with Buffalo Bill, Jr. in “Rawhide”, supported by an episode of “The Radio Detective” serial and a comedy short, “The Haunted Heiress” with Edna Marion.

When the State Theatre converted to sound in 1929, it was a bombshell and also popular with local audiences. The Mills were unable to make the conversion to talkies. The theatre’s fate was similar to an inordinate number of other independent silent houses unable to convert, a fire ended operations on January 9, 1930. The venue became home to G&L Pharmacy. The building has since been demolished.
