The Circus of Varieties was opened in 1889. It was a wooden building, designed by architect Henry Mortimer. In 1895 it was taken over by Thomas Barrasford and converted into a variety theatre named Jarrow Palace of Varieties. It suffered damage from a fire in 1912 and was rebuilt as the Palace Theatre. It was still open in 1915, but was later demolished.
