Following World War II, returning soldiers used the benefits of the G.I. Bill to build new theaters. In Alabama, unassuming movie houses were built in unlikely towns. The Rog Theatre in Piscah, the Gerald Theatre in Geraldine and the Sylvia Theatre in Sylvania are such venues.
Robert D. Word’s Circuit of Scottsboro built this venue operated by Charles Sisk. It was Word’s fifth location and it opened on April 2, 1948 with Penny Singleton in “Blondie’s Anniversary”. The Sylvia Theatre was air conditioned but the venue was hit hard by TV and reduced to five day a week operation in 1954.
Word found small town drive-in’s more lucrative than the hardtops. He’d move on from the Sylvia Theatre with its last advertised show on December 16, 1956 with Burt Lancaster in “From Here to Eternity”. In 1976, Mr. Word and the Popcorn Company of Scottsboro donated the aged, moribund facility to the city for a potential restoration. It doesn’t appear to have been completed.
