Columbia Cinema

The Columbia Cinema operated for 29 years in The Dalles by Bruce Humphrey formerly of the Cascade Cinema in town. The Columbia Cinema opened on January 26, 1996. He had previously operated the Cascade Cinema in Cascade Square from November 9, 1992 to 1996 when he launched the Columbia Cinema.

The theatre was part of a three-theatre company called Destiny Entertainment Corporation with an additional location continuing in Hermiston and a former location in Pendleton. The first 24 years were sound but the Columbia Cinema closed along with virtually all indoor theaters around the globe on March 16, 2020 for the COVID-19 pandemic. The venue reopened on September 21, 2020 only to close again for the pandemic on November 17, 2020.

The theatre reopened in 2021 shutting down a third time for the pandemic briefly on April 27, 2021. The quad theatre then operated continuously for more than three years but by then streaming was decimating the business model of the movie industry. The Columbia Cinema closed permanently on the venue’s 29th anniversary - January 26, 2025.
