Hiroshima’s Alpark is a large multi-purpose shopping center located in the Nishi-ku side of Hiroshima, and was developed by a variety of private companies. At the same time of its opening on April 27, 1990, a 390-seat twin-screen theater by the name of Alpark Cinema opened that same day on the 2-26-1 block of Kusatsu Shinmachi, running a mix of foreign, American, and Japanese features under the 176-seat Screen 1 and the 214-seat Screen 2 on the 6th floor of the east building at Alpark. The Alpine Cinema closed for the final time on April 12, 2009.
Exactly five years after the twin-screener opened, a very unusual drive-in theater was added on 1-16-1 Iguchi Myojin on the rooftop of the west side at Alpark. The drive-in opened on July 27, 1995 with a capacity of 100 cars, Dolby Digital, and FM sound. Unfortunately that theater closed a little more than 10 years later on November 25, 2005 when was fully converted quickly enough into a parking lot.
Fifteen days after the original twin-screener closed comes a new 9-screen theater on the 3rd and 4th floors of the north building operated by the 109 Cinemas chain, opening at the 4-7-1 block of Kusatsu Minami on April 27, 2009 with nine screens and 1,539 seats. All of its auditoriums are originally normal theaters, but it wasn’t until July 2016 when Screen 2 was converted into a 4DX theater.
A little known fact about that auditorium is that both Screens 2 and 8 share the amount of seats as well as it being the smallest auditoriums. Screen 4 was the largest with 426 seats, and the rest have ranging capacities of 104-217.
