The Sangoza Playhouse opened its doors in 1952 as a special events theater, but was converted into a movie theater the following year in 1953 and was renamed the Sakurazaka Ryueikan. On November 28, 1986, the theater was tripled and became the Sakurazaka Cinecon Ryuei, with three auditoriums named the La Scalaza, Roxy, and Kirinkan, and had affiliations of both Shochiku and Toei.
The theater briefly closed on April 10, 2005, and reopened as the Sakurazaka Theater on July 1, 2005. It housed 476 seats all under auditorium halls A, B, and C. Hall A housed 291 seats, while Hall B has 100 seats and Hall C has 85 seats.
