The Kurume Roman Theater opened its doors on July 1, 1955 as a second-run house screening both flat and CinemaScope films, and had an original capacity of 260 seats. It was first managed by Asia Kogyo and operated by Koike Hirosuke. There’s not a lot of information about this theater, and some information about this may be incorrect.

The theater first operated as a single-screener under the name “Kurume Roman Gekijo” or “Roman Eigeki”, but two more auditoriums named the “Kyoei” and “Romantica” were added by 1973. By 1980, the “Kurume Roman Gekijo” name was renamed the “Toho Roman”, later shorten to just plain “Toho”. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of details on what totally happened to all three auditoriums later in its history, so that remains unconfirmed at this time.

It was closed on September 24, 2000 because of both declining moviegoers and multiplex growth in the area.
