There are two Capitol Theatres in Grande Prairie. The first and older 1922-built Capitol Theatre (formerly the Grand Theatre) closed as a movie theatre in 1936 when a second and newer Capitol Theatre opened at the same time that same year.

The Capitol Theatre closed as a movie theatre on May 1, 1965 with Sean Connery in “Woman Of Straw”, but continued to operate as a special events theatre for a short stint until closure by the end of the year. It received renovation the following year in November 1966, but was demolished in mid-July 1978.
