The Ione Business & Community Association in November 2019 placed a plaque near the entrance of 14 W. Main Street. The plaque reads: “The Royal Theatre, formerly the Electric Theatre, after being closed for a decade, reopened March 31, 1939, with “The Spirit of Culver”, starring Jackie Cooper”.

The Royal Theatre dates back in Film Daily Year Book to 1926-1946. Beginning in 1947 it was listed as the 200-seat Ione Theatre and in 1951, 270 seats.

For many years the theatre was owned by the Sullivan family. The Ione theatre closed in 1961 and the building is now occupied by various businesses.

The plaque also reads: “Prior to 1914, theatergoers viewed silent movies and legitimate shows in the Women’s Pavilion at the west end of Main Street”. The Women’s Pavilion at 116 West Main Street burned June 10, 1923, and was replaced by the Ione Auditorium, which burned January 5, 1963.
