Theater

This theater appears on the 1909 Sanborn. It was located on one of three odd, wedge-shaped blocks formed by a now vanished convergence of Delaware Street and Main Street. The building was a three story brick structure with a stone facade at either end. The 1895 map shows it used as a store.

Although the Delaware Street side is shown with an arched opening, there is a balcony at the eastern or Main Street end. The address may very well have been 706 Main Street, but it does seem that the entrance was on the western end.

Despite being larger than the rather rinky-dink Arcade Theatre operation due to its more northerly location in the block, and with superior facilities, this theater appears to have closed by 1914-15, as nothing appears at this address in the AMPD.

The 1939 map shows this as a carpenter, now with a 709 Delaware Street address on the west end. All three of the wedge-shaped blocks were destroyed, likely in the dark days of urban ‘renewal’. Delaware Street now exists only north of 70, Main Street runs through the area where the structures were, and the neighborhood is a bleak wasteland of enormous surface lots and some hideous modern buildings.

Prior to this theater was occupied by several stores, including a jewelry store operated by H. Oppenheimer during the early-1890s, and the Excelsior Trunk Factory owned by N.M. Freleng in the early-1900s.

The Arcade was the trunk factory, at least according to the maps.
