Hudson Theatre

On July 16, 1926, local exhibitor Robert Hudson announced plans to construct a new theatre in the Buckley block at 515 East Main Street, where an existing space was to be “converted into one of the most beautiful moving picture theatres in eastern Indiana". Hudson, who’d formerly operated the Palace Theatre and Richmond Theatre under fifteen-year leases, and Buckley Realty planned to spend $50,000 on the remodel, which was handled by general contractor John W. Mueller. The 500-seat showplace featured a $10,000 Robert Morton unit organ and promised “high class first run films at popular prices”.

Work started July 26, 1926. The Hudson Theatre debuted November 10, 1926, with “Syncopating Sue” starring Corrine Griffith. Otto Furman’s Singing Orchestra appeared opening night. The local newspaper noted that “With the completion of the new Hudson theatre and the theatre now under construction at Ninth Street and Main Street [the Tivoli Theatre] Richmond will have eight play houses, five of them devoted exclusively to moving pictures and all but two of them located on Main street.”

The Hudson Theatre closed for the summer on May 12, 1942, and never reopened.

Robert Hudson closed his namesake theater “for the summer” in May 1942, a year after he opened his new State Theatre located a block away.
