Teatro Nacional was the second theatre opened by the Benitez Theatre Circuit and operated by Miguel “Mike” Benitez, Sr. It was one of the longest lasting venues in the circuit opening in December of 1925. Like their first theater, the Iris across the street in downtown Weslaco, Teatro Nacional catered to Hispanic audiences.
The theatre was equipped for sound and then underwent a transformation in 1938 which enlarged it from 250 to 300 seats. The theatre survived into the TV era before closing. The building housing it has since been demolished.
