Southgate Shopping Center opened in the early-1960’s as one of Jacksonville’s first major suburban retail clusters.

The cinema was added shortly afterward as a single‑screen neighborhood house. It operated under the ABC Florida State Theatre banner. It was converted to a twin sometime in the 1970’s then closed around the time of the opening of the Regency Square Mall Theatres in the 1990’s
