In Vinaròs, a fishing port in eastern Spain, in the province of Castellon, the JJ Cinema opened on 16th March 1984 with 500 seats (subsequently reduced to 350).

It was owned by Juan José Figuerola, and opened with “Star Wars” sequel “Return of the Jedi”, but closed a few years later (precise date not known) due to a lack of business.

However, the Quiroga family, who had run numerous cinemas in Castellón for over forty years, re-opened the JJ Cinema on 2nd October 1990. But they faced competition from multiplexes in nearby towns, and the JJ Cinema closed once again on 29th September 2003, with “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, starring Sean Connery.

The family expressed its willingness to make the venue available for events organised by the town council and other community groups. However, it then re-opened again, as a full-time cinema, on 9th May 2014. It was managed by Santiago Sales, but he died on 24th May 2019, and the JJ Cinema closed for good.

This was the only cinema operating in Vinaròs. A local group, The Platform for the Reopening of Cinema in Vinaròs, has since been campaigning for the reintroduction of cinema in the town.
