In Arrowtown, a historic gold mining town in the Otago region of the South Island, Dorothy Browns Cinema was opened in September 2001 by Philippa Archibald. The first film, the 1999 German-Hungarian “Gloomy Sunday: A Song of Love and Death”, set the determinedly arthouse feel of this unique cinema.

There are two screens: The ‘Main’ one, seating 50, and ‘The Den’ (a more intimate space with blankets and couches), seating 18. There is also a bookstore and The Balcony bar.

(I have been unable to find the reason, or source, for the cinema’s name.)
