Rue de Bethune has always been the street of the cinema in Lille, with the Capitole, Regent, Cameo and later Ariel, Concorde, UGC & Majestic. This cinema opened in 1925 with 1,200 seats with the name Familia Palace. In the 1930’s it was taken over by Paramount and became Familia Paramount. It was one of the largest and important cinemas in Lille and showed “Metropolis” directed Fritz Lang and “The Sheik” with Rudolph Valentino in the silent era. Marlene Dietrich in “Shangai Express & Gary Cooper in "The Lives of Bengal Lancer” in the 1930’s and in the 1950’s “The Greatest Show on Earth” starring James Stewart.

In 1977 it was taken over by Gaumont and became a multiplex with finally 8 screens. Into the 1990’s it was still the main complex until the arrival of UGC Cine Cite multiplex in the Rue de Bethune and Kinepolis multiplex in the Lomme district. The Gaumont lost business and closed in 1997. It became for a time “les Galeries Lafayette” store before it was demolished for a commercial centre.
