The Owl Theatre in Covelo, California, was open by October 1915, when it was mentioned in Moving Picture World magazine. Lovell and James L. Durnford bought the Owl Theatre from E. M. Durnford in the autumn of 1932, remodeling it with a new screen and increased seating capacity. (At the time, Film Daily Year Book listed it with a capacity of 210.) J. W. Taylor bought the Owl Theatre in 1937 and remodeled again, renaming it the Covelo Theatre.

The Ukiah Republican Press reported in July 1946 that the Covelo Theatre had moved “across the street from its old location” (wherever that was) to give the Woman’s Improvement Club a chance to improve “the grounds on the south side of the Clubhouse”.

From February 26, 1949, Harold C. Tuttle was operating the Covelo Theatre, soon renamed the Round Mountain Theatre. He added a 24x11-foot metal CinemaScope screen in 1955 as part of another remodeling.

Tuttle died in 1957, and his widow continued running the Round Mountain Theatre until selling it to Robert Conner in 1965. In the summer of 1967, the Round Mountain Theatre closed for good, despite Audrey Tuttle’s efforts to find a lessee. It was destroyed by a fire.

Boxoffice, Feb. 26, 1949: “The H. C. Tuttles have purchased the theatre business in Covelo from G. W. Taylor of San Andreas, who has owned the business for the last ten years. The Tuttles plan to enlarge, repair and modernize the building in the spring”

This Facebook page has a discussion about the Round Mountain Theatre among long-time Covelo residents. A number of the comments mention the Tuttles. It’s not easy to puzzle out details from all the (sometimes conflicting) memories, but what is clear is that the theater was in the 76300 block of Main Street. Either before or after the building was moved it was next door to what is now Eel River Charter School, which is at 76350 Main.

The theater, which had wooden seats, was a large redwood building which, after its theater days, may have been a church for a while, then the offices of a publishing company, and finally a building supply store. It eventually burned down. The Facebook post has a photo of the entrance area (there were wooden stairs up to a narrow porch), but you can’t tell much from it.
