Continuous Theatre

The 1904 map shows a clothing store here. The Continuous Theatre was possibly opened by 1906. The Continuous Theatre was listed in a March 21, 1908 edition of Billboard. It was operated by C.N. Waters and had 250-seats with shows nightly. The theatre appears on the 1909 Sanborn, but was closed on December 18, 1909. It was located in the western half of an old two story brick commercial building, which was constructed sometime before 1886.

Although the 1914-15 AMPD lists the Lyric Theatre at this address, that theater was at 36-38, and the 1915 map shows this theater closed and replaced by a grocery.

This building was lost many years ago, and the corner has been a parking lot since at least 2008.

Here is a closing notice from The New York Dramatic Mirror of December 18, 1909: “C. N. Waters has closed the Continuous Theatre at Corry, Pa., moved to a new location and opened the New Lyric, which is one of the neatest in this section, handsomely equipped with all latest improvements, with six threefoot aisles and plenty of fire escapes. The opening occurred Dec. 2 to capacity business and souvenirs were given to all on the opening night.”

I don’t think the New Lyric mentioned in this item could have been the one at 36-38 W. Main, given the description of “…six threefoot aisles….” etc.

A 1913 trade journal item that mentioned C. N. Waters said that he had been in the movie business at Corry for seven years, so the Continuous might have opened as early as 1906.

A bit confusing. I don’t think the theater at 36-38 could have opened in 1909, since that map was issued in December, and doesn’t even show a building under construction. In addition, the New Lyric doesn’t necessarily mean there was a prior Lyric. So this was likely the Continuous, and then a New Lyric operated for about 4 years before moving to its new building, and becoming just the Lyric. Maybe.
