Royal Theatre

The New Royal Theatre opened in 1919 as a replacement of an earlier Royal Theatre (formerly the Plaza Dome Theatre which opened in 1914) that got destroyed by a fire earlier that year. The newer Royal Theatre was built on the site of the Giroux’s Pool Room.

Throughout much of its golden age, it was operated by Napoleon Boucher of St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec, who also served as the projectionist for the theatre. His wife Irene would join the theatre business after marrying Napoleon. The Royal Theatre received a front remodel during the early-1950’s. In the mid-1950’s, Palace Hotel owner Lad Medve, who previously owned a successful donut shop in Timmins, bought the Royal Theatre from Boucher, who also renovated the theatre with a modern front and a flashy marquee that extended over the sidewalk and announced the current feature.

The Royal Theatre was still open in the 1970’s, but its closing date remains unconfirmed.
