The landmark entertainment hub in rural Hendry County during the mid-20th century was the Dixie Crystal Theatre, which was originally built in 1934 by pioneer newspaperwoman and entrepreneur Mary Hayes Davis. Early records of Mary Hayes Davis’s theatrical layouts in the area noted intimate configurations featuring localized murals—such as painted Florida coastal scenes surrounding the screens—and rows of classic “opera chairs” to maximize seating capacity. The theatre first opened in 1923 as a tin-structure movie house and it continually brought cinema to the community until it officially closed its doors in the early-1960’s. The original structure was ultimately demolished in the early-1970’s. (National Park Services)
