The Star Theatre opened on December 18, 1936 in tiny Marquette, Iowa - population then around 800. Its opening film was Jack Benny in “The Big Broadcast of 1937” and it was operated by Harold Hall of Elkader’s Rivola Theatre. The Star Theatre was carved into an existing retail store with 210 seats, Nu-Wood walls, lots of stucco, a neon sign and bright lights. A cry room was added later.

The Star Theatre stumbled closing in its initial year only to open again late that year. It then closed for nearly five years beginning in 1940. It reopened at the tail end of World War II by Milo D. Moody. The venue was converted to widescreen. It appears to have closed December 3, 1960 with Elana Eden in “The Story of Ruth”. The building housing the former theatre burned down on March 17, 2014.
