A good old fashioned cinema. Originally the old town hall, it sits above a bookshop with two screens. The larger (screen 1) has a balcony and 403 seats, whilst screen 2, much smaller with 76 seats, has a list of the Mayors of the town on the back wall, still left over from its days as a town hall. Pictures of classic film stars hang on the walls, and in the entrance stairway pictures of Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin are on display. There is a traditional box office, with a small ticket off a roll, which is torn by the steward a whole three foot walk away.
In short it is a quaint little cinema, still going despite competition from a modern multiplex a few miles up the road. Both screens are equipped with digital projection and screen 1 has retained a FP20 35mm projector.

Another “quaint” cinema nicely described on this site is the Gem Cinema in Newport, Wales, q.v.

Cool!! Glad there’s another cinema that’s not a big multi-theatre cineplex.
Interior shows main screen with Balcony in July, 2006. Threatened with mothballing in 2014 until funding for digital equipment secured. First showed films in the 19th century!
As mentioned above, this cinema’s future past the end of the month is uncertain.
The sad thing is that it is not due to lack of bums on seats – it’s because distributors will no longer carry expensive 35mm prints of the latest films, and they cannot afford digital equipment.

The Silver Screen Cinema has been open for nearly 25 years and ended a two-year period without a cinema when the Cannon closed. That cinema was, in turn, open since 1912.
The Silver Screen remains open in the town hall as at mid 2019, but there is talk of a cinema being included in the Debenhams store which is marked for closure like many others.
