The Temple Theatre opened in 1919 in the newly-built Masonic Temple building on Market Square. The Temple Theatre originally held a large balcony, box seats, and a large squarish proscenium arch over the stage area. In the 1980’s, the Temple Theatre was twinned down the middle.
In 2002, after falling into disrepair, new owners acquired the Temple Theatre and renovated and restored the theatre, which can seat 200 in each auditorium. In March 2023 it was announced that the Temple Theatre would be closed on June 29, 2023

The Theatre Historical Society on-line archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Temple; it’s Card # 380. Address is “Market”. There is an exterior photo taken April 1941. Condition is Fair. The report says that it’s over 15 years old, and was showing MGM movies. There were 605 main floor seats and 119 in the baalcony, total 724. A competing theater was the Houlton Theatre downtown. The 1940 population was 7,700.
