ABC Cinema (Oak) Selley Oak 1964

Located in the southwest Birmingham district of Selly Oak. Beautiful theatre, quite large inside. The Oak Cinema was opened on 26th March 1923 with 1,111 seats. It was re-opened in 1929 and was taken over by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) in March 1935. In September 1935, it was closed for alterations which enlarged the stage and extended the balcony seating area. The Oak Cinema re-opened on 16th December 1935 with 1,506 seats.

It was renamed ABC in 1965. Taken over by an independent operator in April 1978, it reverted back to the Oak Cinema name. But this was short lived and the Oak Cinema closed on 3rd November 1979. It was demolished almost immediately and a Sainsbury’s supermarket was built on the site. This too is scheduled to close when a new Sainsbury on Chapel Lane is built in the future.
