Exit sign from the Fenkell

Opened in 1925, the Fenkell Theatre, on Fenkell Avenue near Dexter Avenue, could seat 690. In 1938 it was given a makeover to the plans of Detroit based architectural firm Rogvoy & Wright. The Fenkell Theatre operated until 1951.

This theatre was just a couple of blocks east of the Picadilly Theatre. Both were 3rd or 4th run theatres but most all of the kids who went to St. Gregory’s RC Church on Dexter, just south of Fenkell went there for the Saturday matinees.

“Wisper & Wetsman’s Fenkell will boast a new front,” said an item in Boxoffice of November 19, 1938. The Fenkell was one of several neighborhood houses in Detroit then being updated with plans by the firm of Wright & Rogvoy.
