Please update, the drive in became 3 screens on June 15, 1979. Just posted the grand opening ad.
I can confirm the number of screens at closing as 3. They were very visible when one traveled East on the Long Island Expressway.
1954 promo ad added via Kathleen Santhouse Botsford‎. Boasts 2,024 car capacity. One local claims it had 3 screens when demolished in `98.

RE: Ed Solero 11/25/14 Never mind the start times…with 2 ½ shows a night, in the summer could end at sunrise…When I was MGR. of Cinema Bayshore next to the Bayshore Drive-in [I was covering it for someone vacation] as the sun was on the rise Barbra was singing “On a clear day you can see forever”…made me smile as I was hanging speakers back..

Had it still been open these days, people would be sitting in crush hour traffic and would be lucky to make a 7 or 730 pm start time.
In winter, the sun sets in these parts between 4:30 and 5pm. Plenty dark for a movie by 5:30. Sometimes, in summer, movies didn’t start late enough so that the first 15 minutes of the program weren’t washed out by remaining daylight!

in the mid to late 80s my parents and i went to the drive in a lot and now they tell me about getting a kick out of seeing these dogs and cats on the screen before the shows started for the evening. i really dont remember too well as i was so young.

Lost Memory, is it possible that the fact that the highway was always backed up (traffic-wise) on both sides due to people trying to enter the Sunrise Drive-In contributed to that drive-in’s ultimate closing down? Just curious.
btw—sounds like you all had lots of fun going to the drive-ins.

Thanks Jim Bono for sending me this site. I managed the Westbury Drive-In in the early 80’s and know at least 2 people writing into this forum – Bill Mitchell who took over as manager of the Drive-In when I became Divsion Manager, and Bob Tooley who managed the Cinema 150 Theatre in Syosset(Woodbury). Bob was fortunate and deserving to run the premier showcase of UA theatres in Nassau County, at the time. Beautifully run and maintained and I’m glad to let Bob know that now. Bill, hope you see this and thanks for the cases of nacho trays when I needed them.
