Hard to believe,We are getting the 1966 movie ,DISNEY MOVIE, LT. ROBIN CRUSOE with Dick Van Dyke. This is 1974. Well, later on when i would move out to COLUMBIA 1 and 2 they booked the 1969 movie MAROONED in COLUMBIA 1 where it died fast.And it was not a bad movie it had been on TV several times.
Two of Goldie Hawn’s first films play here CACTUS FLOWER and THERE IS A GIRL IN MY SOUP with Peter Sellers. Sellers would also show up at NATIONAL HILLS for WHERE DOES IT HURT?
Ijust always thought of the LOEWS in Atlanta:that all LOEWS theatres were big downtown theatres.
Tisloews. Are Loews Melrose, and Madison downtown theatres? I find it hard to believe they were booking G rated movies in a downtown theatre. I can’t remember one G rated movie ever playing at either the MILLER or Imperial theatres in downtown Augusta,while I worked there in the mid 70’s.Just was no market for kid movies. Your two theatres must have been out like National Hills.
Mike we always showed ALL the Disney flicks at the Loews Melrose and Loews Madison,big business,lots of “RUGRATS” aka Kids as we called them.
Well, The big 1976 christmas picture didn’t last long. The GREAT ADVENTURE is gone and what do the guys in booking office put in? avery lousy ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH which is trashy and this Rated R flick has made the Drive in rounds having come out in 1975!
Mr.Tinney is trying to sell it on DAVID JANSSEN star of TV’s HARRY O! Hey, Isn’t KIRK DOUGLAS in this a MOVIE STAR. Well, I don’t think KIRK could save this re-re-re-LEASE!
Do you even remember GUS i am sure you being a downtown theatre you did not get much Disney product in those years,.I really don’t think GUS was ever on video. ED Ashner {LouGrant} starred.
So Gus was a Bust!And good no last show,that did not happen much,you can go home early after you call in the numbers,After 11:00 P.M. I will try to remember some of our DUDS!
While i am on stinkers at NATIONAL HILLS and I know every fancy theatre got a few bombs,here is one that played one week with many nights no one on the last show. Summer of 75. we had DOC SAVAGE with Ron Ely{Tarzan on TV].RatedPG we couldn’t even get the kid business.
I see it advertised onTURNER CLASSIC movies.They never sat in an empty theatre in Augusta.
Probably,one of DISNEY’S worst movies ever to be shown “GUS” about a mule that kicks field goals,and not it was not for the OAKLAND RAIDERS ,a team called the ATOMS, the production on this film was a joke and it quickly died. Disney’s policy with Drive ins kept it from closing any Augusta Drive in sooner. This had to be a bad time for Disney.

Looked over at what is left of NATIONAL HILLS the theatre itself is all that is standing.Everything else gone. The Marquee,Long gone. Box office, that beautiful lobby and concessions.Everything but the old theatre. Cold Georgia rain hitting the roof.THey cut every thing off that complete theatre like cancer.
If you were Drive by you could see the auditorium standing alone. I wish they would take a wrecking ball and put it out of its misery. It is a pity that theatre could have not been saved.But who has the money. And this story can be told I know in hundreds of cities in this great country.
Can you believe it? Charles calls and tells me NATIONAL HILLS the Pride of Augusta Theares is getting HAPPY HOOKER GOES TO WASHINGTON, we both agree this thing ought to be out at the WEIS CINEMA CENTER. Why in 1977 would such a film be booked in this neighborhood?
I did go over to watch it and It was nothing! Iam sure it was sent to the WEIS DRIVE IN after a week run. Stars Joey Heatherton and George Hamilton. rated R.
N,DiMaggio, I thought in the back of my mind it came out in 72.But I went and checked a video book i had and it had 1975. I am afraid to put dates down unless I checked them. I did.And the book said 1975.The book was wrong.
Mike, According to the Internet Movie Database “The Legend of Boggy Creek” was released in 1972. I saw it first-run and was pretty certain it was ‘72 but wanted to verify before making a fool of myself. Not sure what source you got 1975 from but it’s incorrect. And by the way, that film scared the heck out of me too and I was 22 at the time!
Here is one for the books. We are playing a Disney movie:can’t remember the name ,but Remember a LETTER TO THE EDITOR from a concerned mom about playing a coming attraction that scared her kid to death! The Trailer was LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK. RATED G! 1975.

One of the few Jack Lemmon movies plays at NATIONAL HILLS co-starring with Sandy Dennis the G rated OUT OF TOWNERS 1970 was better than the Martin/HAWN effort. THE APRIL FOOLS did play first run at the IMPERIAL.
ELI WALLACH and LYNN REDGRAVE in very forgettable movie that has no business at this theatre a movie called DON’T TURN THE OTHER CHEEK. Plays one week.
Mr.Mackey tells me in the office the bookers inCharlotte are impressed with our LATE SHOW picks. He told me he tells them his Doorman{me] helps in selection since no one else here even cares. I pick STRAWBERRY STATEMENT for a weekend run and we continue to IMPRESS the big bookers.
National Hills Theatre presents the last Augusta Showing of Disney’s SONG OF THE SOUTH. From what i was told by Mr.Pete,The Projectionist, the movie did great business ; much like JUNGLE BOOK when it opened first run at National Hills.
Thanks for the info I had thought they had both passed away. Mark Lester only made a couple of films anyway? I know Wild was in the movie H.R. PUFFNSTUFF?
Jack Wild died of natural causes a few years ago. Mark Lester quit show biz and became a doctor in England. An osteopath, I believe.
I alaways liked OLIVER even though i saw it at age 13 or 14. I thought it was pretty good, and Oliver Reed gave a great performance. Aren’t the two child stars Mark Lester and Jack Wild dead? Drugs I bet.
OLIVER! played at the LOEWS TARA for almost a year in it’s original roadshow run. A month after it closed it opened in several cities across and Atlanta and Georgia equipped to run 70mm. It was in it’s POPULAR PRICES, EXACTLY AS SHOWN IN IT’S ROADSHOW ENGAGEMENT run. I saw it at NORTH DEKALB MALL. OLIVER! was shown in 70mm at many of these theatres but without the intermission. I never felt OLIVER! needed an intermission. I believe RYAN’S DAUGHTER was the last roadshow picture that ran with an intermission.
