Just a short note to say that AMC has finally fixed (or replaced) the scrolling video sign below the marque. It had been broken for several years. It still doesn’t give you much information about what’s playing inside, however.
This place is going down hill ever since AMC took it over.
Not sure why they won’t invest in new seats or fix men’s room.
Will look at Showcase Cinemas first before AMC for a movie.
Showcase is all digital @ Randolph & Patriot Place.
This was another of the theaters designed for Loew’s by architect David Rockwell.
No way I could see Iron Man 2 at Boston Common after reading the wicked local blog.
If I see the film in IMAX, Jordan’s in Reading for me.

They’re now aiming at May 7 for the opening of Iron Man 2, though it may be ready a week or two earlier.
From experience I can honestly say when you sit up front the IMAX effect is sort of intact on the IMAX digital screens.
However they have raised the prices even MORE! $17.50 at night for 3D compared to $11.50 at Jordan’s and $12.95 at the Aquarium

If you are wondering about fake IMAX for Alice in Wonderland, Boston Common went Real 3D for the movie. Shutter Island was being shown this weekend in their over 600 seat auditorium. Fake IMAX is still planned for the spring.

Have been learning quite a lot on this fascinating thread, but now have a question perhaps someone like pmont can answer. I attended many, many, many movies in Boston during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s in such beautiful theaters. Does anyone know of a website(s) where I night find interior pictures of these beautiful movie houses, some with marble staircases and velvet drapes, one with a dome. As well as those downtown, I also went to the Exeter as I lived in Back Bay 2 blocks away. Now although I get to Boston frequently (I live in Vermont), I only get to about a dozen movies there a year, usually to the Common or Fenway. So I do understand a lot of the comments and explanations that have been posted.

I’ve been to these cinemas a number of times and the place is not always that busy. The place itself is OK and the auditoriums themselves are pretty big.
Very rude and idiotic staff sadly let the place down.
Imax digital is the new coke of Hollywood. Once it fails soon, then AMC will gut those screens and add real imax screens!!!
It’s a licensing ploy by the IMAX and AMC to make you think that you are going to see a movie in the original IMAX process (specially projected 70mm film on a screen about six stories high) when all you get is a somewhat larger screen and digital projection. Fake IMAX? What is that?
Hey dapetitpas! I saw the “:Yelp” blog. It seems cool. Not too crazy about the AMC Theatres, especially because they play such schlocky films, they’re overpriced, as are the concession stands, and they tend to be full of kids whose parents had no babysitters and couldn’t find another place to leave their kids, or tend to be full of rowdy kids who just get off on being rude.
Bad news.
Fake IMAX is coming.

The “Fake” Imax is in Methuen and Danvers.

I guess with the economy, AMC did not go ahead with its plans to convert one of the theaters to digital IMAX. The “coming soon” sign came down in October.
Since there are only two movie theatres in Boston, and this is the larger one (with 19 screens, vs. 13 at Regal Fenway 13), I’d guess that it is also the ‘busier’ one.
Can anyone tell me if this is the busiest theater in Boston? I never been to Boston but from what I read it doesn’t have as many theaters as markets it’s size has. If this isn’t the busiest one in Boston can someone tell me which one is?
Loews Boston Common opened in 2001, so if you saw this movie here, it was more recently than ten years ago.
The Boston Common AMC (formerly Lowes) Theatre is a huge, cavernous place. I saw the film “Apocalypse Now—Redux” there roughly ten or eleven years ago, which was pretty intense. I also like the fact that there are stadium seats, which means that one looks directly down at the movie screen, rather than at the backs of people’s heads the whole time.

Ron…I had no idea that the Neponset Drive-in down in Dorchester was still open. Or is it?
