According to George Perry’s 2005 book “James Dean”, Dean and actress Ursula Andress attended a sneak preview screening of the final cut of “Rebel Without A Cause” at the Village Theatre in Westwood on Saturday September 17, 1955, less than two weeks before he was killed in an auto accident.
Saw the 115pm show of “Deadpool” here today. Regency sunk some money here again. The THX and Atmos rocked as usual. Hands down the best cinema around.
Just came from the 1250pm showing of Star Wars here. @giles, this is THE Dolby Atmos cinema in Los Angeles. Light years ahead of the El Capitan.
Regency website shows the Hobbit opening Tuesday evening and Bruin has Exodus though Tuesday. Since Hobbit is a Wednesday release it probably means the theaters are still sorting out their schedules and have not gotten the showtimes out there yet.
Looks like this cinema and the Bruin are closing. No show times for both either on Flixter or Regency’s app after today
I have to say I was initially worried about the Atmos retrofit for the theater and how it would affect the Village aesthetically. Having gone to see Apes at the Village this week, those concerns were unfounded. Unlike the El Capitan, where it looks like they just hung scaffolding to attach the new speakers (Which might be all they could do and protect the architecture… so not to bash the El Cap) the Village Atmos is very well installed. Oh, and it sounds great too. So yeah… Dolby Atmos and THX together at last!
Dolby Atmos is now running in this theatre – alongside THX. And BOY OH BOY does it rumble in there. FANTASTIC sound!

But I’m glad to see this arrangement. The Village and Bruin have been on a positive trajectory since the closing of the Avco and it looks like the iPic might have been the best thing for them (sort of how splitting the booking for the Chinese and the Arclight Hollywood has really improved the viability of the Chinese the past 9 months). Great to see so many of the previously endangered treasures getting some extra life.
It looks like it could work out better for Regency after all. They are not stuck with long engagements and will keep the bookings fresh as you said. Even though Westwood is working on an upswing I doubt there will be any other new theatres built there. I think the idea is to keep it a village and not the monster it was in the 70’s and 80’s. Along with the Regent and Crest there are enough screens in Westwood. Too bad the Festival could not be utilized again.
The fact that both are booking day and date is fantastic news for both. I couldn’t imagine how iPic was going to book in their low seating count auditoriums while the Village had 1200 seats up the street. Conversely, it looks like the Village and Bruin will now be able to continue shorter 2 week bookings and keep those films fresh. This is a happy, happy day.
iPIC (formerly AMC AVCO) has opened. They are booking day/date with Regency. Both are showing Trancendence, both are getting Spiderman 2 and Godzilla (day/date) in May.
This is great news! The Village installed Dolby Atmos. From their Facebook page. Now we dont have to spend $19 dollars to hear Atmos at the other theaters in LA.

I attended a 12/23 Sunday afternoon showing of the Hobbitt in HFR and it was beautiful. Tragically, only into the second week of a blockbuster, there were only 27 of us attendees.
I had figured the Dome would be a shoe-in for this. It’s great because The Village could actually have several sell-outs in a row, which rarely happens these days.
I worked at the Village when they showed 70MM films. There was a period when we had one right after another. Good for Regency and for the Village.

Yes, this is the same theater. I figured that a movie like this would at least get a few (5 or 6) 70mm prints when you consider the scope of the movie, and the fact that it was written/directed by a man who has the creative freedom to do whatever he wants.
I know if we Chicagoians can’t get a 70mm print, I might have to save up for plane/hotel fare come October.
is this the same theater that in70mm.com is stating that is getting an exclusive 70mm engagement of P.T Anderson’s latest film ‘The Master’ (come this October)?

Although the Village hasn’t run a 70mm print for many years, a 70mm conversion kit for their venerable Norelco/Philips DP70 has been tracked down, and, pending final decisions and arrangements, it seems likely that L.A. will have its first commercial engagement of a new movie, presented “in the splendor of 70mm” in many years (last known previous one was “Hamlet”, back in December 1996)."
The new operators do feel the history of the Village and Bruin. I’d guess they knew they are not cash cows like they once were. But they are so iconic that I think they really helped legitimize Regency theatres. I would guess they are not exactly seeing huge profits.
That is my take on it.
Have many great memories involving this theatre. Hope the new operators have a feel for history and presentation!
Back in 2003 when Daredevil was released the The Landmark 12 did not exist, and the AMC Century City was 14 screens was only 3,800 seats (Not sure what seat count is for the 15 plex). The Village still did big business on new releases, heck even the National was near selling out in 2002/2003 with Spiderman (Selling Out), Sum of All Fears, Italian Job and a few other big titles. Patrons have moved on.
The Landmark 12 and AMC 15 along with the ever thriving Grove and Arclight really hit Westwood hard. 400 is about as big as the Village will get these days (Maybe more this Summer with Dark Knight Returns). This year Regency will probably make ther biggest b.o. from the theatre because of the Avco being closed and short one and two week bookings. I really do not see the Village and Bruin returning to the glory days the once had.
Especially considering that there were 900+ watching it at any given time at the Landmark and AMC Century City.
“Only 400?” For a movie that just made $150M in 3 days, over 400 for the late show on opening night sadly indicates most people have abandoned this theater. I remember going to the 10:30pm opening night show of Daredevil at the Village 9 years ago and it was nearly sold out (and that movie only made $45m opening weekend). The Village SHOULD HAVE been sold out. Just a few years ago it would have been.
On 3/23 caught the 10:45PM “Hunger Games” show at the Village and was happy to see over 400, mostly UCLA students, in attendance.
