I surprised there was no way that the building could be altered for a new use. It just surprises me that they had to tear a less than 20 year old building down. You would think it would have been less expensive to alter the existing builing, but I guess not.
That was “my” place. I grew up in Medford, and seeing the place reduced to rubble, to piles of cement, seats and other debris, was heartbreaking! I work in retail, and from inside sources, here is what I’ve learned about the fate of the property.
There was a bidding war between Walmart and Kohl’s (I work for Kohl’s). Walmart won, and they will be building on the site of the theater. Kohl’s has secured and area next to the Medford Target (on the north side of the LIE, and are already actively planning for their construction there. So the place I grew up, where you had to drive a half hour to get to any kind of shopping, will now have Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, and Sam’s Club all within 5 minutes of each other. Commercialism at it’s best, don’t you think?
I went by today, and what a sad sight it was. The sign is still there intact on the service road, but the theater is a bunch of piles of concrete rubble.
I used to work here as an usher 2001-2002 until the new theater Island 16 opened and I was transfered there. I have alot of great memories there and I even got to go inside once months after it was closed. Well the building has unfortunatly been bulldozed sometime this past week. I pass it often and was shocked to see it gone. I guess someone finaly bought it. Ah well Brookhaven Multiplex it was nice knowing you, farewell.
If anyone finds out if this property is still for sale and the asking price (or lease)…please let me know.
I would venture to guess the Town of Brookhaven may be able to help you there. Medford, where the theater is located is in Brookhaven Township. They would at least have a record of the property’s owner. Brookhaven Town Hall is located on Bicycle Path in Farmingville, New York.
Where would you find out information about purchasing it?
It would probably be good for a large catering hall. The places are already partitioned so you can probably hold small banquets and meetings in there.

OK / This is one of only 3 pieces of land in Brookhaven town that is still zoned for boxed stores so would think we will see one on this site . Target in the past has been talked about…

They were talking about Target, but that fell through, and they are building a new building on Horseblock Rd. There was also talk about a box store, as limovies said (a store like BJ’s or something). I don’t know for sure if there are any definite negotiations in progress right now. It is a well built building and quite large, and only about 20 years old. Once gutted it could become anything that needs all that space, although a warehouse like store would probably be best suited.

There is a second question, and that is what can be done with it after it’s bought.
I heard 34 acres with a price tag of $13 million, but that was when they closed. It may have a higher price tag now.

Does anybody know how big the property is that Brookhaven Multiplex sits on, or how much they are looking to sell it for?
I just looked back at a comment I made and realized my typo. The manager did not let me “it” for free, but in. I just realized the mistake I made weeks ago.
I went to see the Fugitive with Harrison Ford at the Brookhaven Multiplex. The theater was almost closing as the film started. The manager let me it for free. I never told this story on the internet before, but it was the most unusual thing that ever happened to me in a movie theater.
Obviously, I meant “The Brookhaven Multiplex is just down the LIE from the Island 16” in my first sentence above….
The Island 16 is just down the LIE from the Holtsville Island 16. NA claimed that they weren’t intending to close the Brookhaven when it built the Island 16 two exits away, but I am certain that they deep down were planning it right from the beginning, when the Island 16 was planned, because you could see that maintenence was being deffered over the last couple years.
It’s a shame, because the Brookhaven was in good shape and a nice theater, however the Island 16 does blow it away. It has a bar with an outdoor patio where you can sit and wait for the movie to start, great food, it really is a destination in and of itself.
I had many good times at the Brookhaven. The first movie I saw there was in one of the large theaters (when it was 12 screens before they cut two in half to make 14), and was the movie “Rainman” in 1987. It’s hard to believe that the lobby I walked through so many times, and was always so packed, especially in the earlier years now sits abandoned. I don’t remember the last movie I saw there, but it had to be at least 5 years ago, unfortunately, I like everyone else abandoned the Brookhaven for the more “modern” multiplexes with the stadium seating.
i used to work at the brookhaven multiplex durring the summer of 2001 and 2001. It was a great job, and frankly i still missed it. I actuley quit because i grew tired with the usher post, and since the island 16 was about to open, i knew the end was near. It sucks really, cause i have alot of found memories of the place. I always kid around saying “when i become rich, ill open the place all for myself”. Hell, every time i think about going to see a movie, my mind still pictures brookhaven multiplex, even though i know ill end up seeing it in island 16. To bad really. I miss the place, bad. Oh well.

I remember working there one night, and cleaning a theater after a film all alone, and felt someones hand brush my back. Now no one but me was in the theater! know if any crimes ever happend there? i remember asking the management, and they just changed the subject real quickly!
I’ve been to this theater once, to see Naked Gun 2 ½, with my girlfriend at the time, along with my best friend and his girlfriend. My best friend was dating his cousin’s best friend’s girlfriend, unbeknowest to my friend’s brother and cousin. The girls lived out in Southold and we lived in Syosset, so it was half-way. My friend’s cousin and brother actually tailed us to the theater where they caught us in the act! I have fond memories of this theater….and of the parking lot. :–)
That was like fifteen years ago. Now I’m blissfully married (not to the aforemention girl) and live in Commack. Nice to come (almost) full circle.
Here is a curent photo of the Brookhaven Multiplex building taken two weeks ago. It is similar to the Commack Cinemas building, still in use. There is rumor that Commack Cinemas will share a similar fate as the Brookhaven, as NA is planning a Cinema de Lux to replace it, just as they opened the Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Holtsville this past year to replace the Brookhaven.
Anyway, click below to see the current photos. Here it sits in it’s sad boarded up condition. A shame because it was in pretty good shape, and fairly new. Full circle, as this theater caused the death of most of the remaining area Downtown theaters, and now the new theater caused it’s closure:

Thanks very much for the update. I am sad to learn that the original Brookhaven theatre in Port Jefferson has been destroyed.
