There are small ads in the NYT (1980) for a Mini Cinema located at 1234 Second Avenue running classic films. Does anyone remember that theatre?

Saw “ONCE” there this past weekend. Uncomfortable seats and it looks like a maze to walk throgh. I am sure this place will close soon. Its now a REGAL Cinema. At least a half hour of ads and previews!

Why the Columbia I & II not a previous name here?

Just saw “Harry Potter” here…thinking back, I believe the last movie I saw here was that Schwarzenegger flick about the colony on Mars, back in the early 90s. Since the Beekman’s closing, I figure Is should go to more movies in theatres before the theatres vanish, so I took in Harry Potter at this one. It was playing in the upstairs theatre, which was quite clean and comfortable. There are colorful drapes on the walls, which under the drapes are plain ugly cinderblock, a little of which was visible. Some of the chairs have graffiti carved or burned into the fabric, but not many. I got a medium beverage and it was HUGE, I had forgotten how large the servings are in theatres. The nachos and cheese were deelish. Unfortunately the lobby and concession areas are very small and uninteresting. I did not see the newest auditorium that made this into a triplex.

Saw “Nadine” here and lots of other movies. I remember the small lobby and the downstairs theatre clearly from the 70s and 80s. Pretty sure I saw “Witness” here. I have not returned since it was called the “Gemini Twin,” and for a while I thought it had been demolished when that new luxury tower was built on top of it. I was glad to find out it is still there.

When it was the Gemini I visited this place once in October 1979 to see the then oh-so-popular Laura Antonelli baring all she had in the Italian film “The Divine Nymph,” a rather poor film apart from the baring.

This theatre was triplexed by real-estate development, actually. The third theatre was added when a luxury condo tower went up at the corner. The two original theatres are still there, and a small hallway between the theatre and the new tower gives moviegoers access to the third theatre, which has its own, but apparently never open, concession stand.

The 64th & 2nd was triplexed sometime in the mid-‘90s.

Wow your right I totally forgot this was The Columbia 1 & 2. I actually liked that old marquee better, there was more of an east side classiness to it. The new one is too gaudy for that location and I HATE the theatres name.

SethLewis
SethLewis on February 23, 2004 at 3:57 pm

This opened in 1971-72? as the UA COLUMBIA I & II as a first run venue primarily for Columbia Pictures…One opening attraction was The Last Picture Show which I managed to get into even though I was a couple of years underage…Columbia managed to run a couple of road show attractions through here as well such as Young Winston and Godspell…Eventually some Fox first run and Universal product came through here and they redid the front and renamed them the Gemini Twins around 1978…Among the pictures I saw here in the 70s – The Last Detail, Images, The New Centurions, The Three Musketeers, A Woman Under the Influence, American Graffiti, A Bridge Too Far, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 2nd run and Rocky in 2nd run…In the 80s Total Recall, Air America
The original marquee was flat against the facade and they tended to squeeze some abrreviated coming attractions onto them…There was also a move in the early 80s to using homemade rather than studio posters for coming attractions
In 1974 they held an all nite Columbia retrospective for the 50th anniversary of Columbia Pictures…my dad tried in vain to track me down there

this theatre was far better as a twin than this stupid triplexing or multiplexing that these theatre companies do.
