Early view of the Lawson Mechanics Institute which was opened 3 p.m. Friday 16th December 1903. It had been constructed 1st August – 18th November, replacing a small wooden structure which had been built on the site in 1899. Costing £407 6s 10d the new hall utilized bricks and stone work from the old railway station nearby - which had been purchased for £20 the previous year.
