  • <p>The City Drive-In Theatre was opened by Meyer A Berenson of the Redwood and State Theatres on August 17 and 18, 1950 with short subjects. Its grand opening shown here was on August 19, 1950 with a showing of Randolph Scott in “The Nevadan” and a midnight showing of the Marx Brothers in “Love Happy” supported by the Max Fleischer cartoon, “All’s Fair at the Fair”.</p>

Below: This notice published on Monday 10th August 1942 obviously came as a result of discussions between the authorities and purveyors of amusement. The earlier finishing time of 10.30 p.m., which was specified for their shows, suggests that it was thought advisable to have patrons home before the possible occurrence of midnight attacks. In fact, Townsville was spared any further bombardment. Not so lucky was Darwin which endured more than 100 raids (many very serious) over two years, until 12th November 1943. After only a brief period of closure the Olympia Open-Air was allowed to resume screening with the new early starting time arrangement on 10th August 1942, but the Roxy’s Sports Ground Drive-In - for reasons unknown - never re-activated.</p>

It opened in 1969, only has a capacity of 34 cars, has 34 seats for those who don’t want to sit in their cars, and operates once a month on a Saturday. It is recognised as the smallest Drive In in Australia.
